Koko, a gorilla born in 1973, was trained in both English and ASL by
Francine Patterson. At the age of three Koko usually signed about
food, but by six years of age, Patterson claims, she began to express
her own ideas about language and could name unfamiliar objects, rhyme
in English, and even lie. According to the official Koko site, Koko
has a working vocabulary of over 1000 signs, understands approximately
2,000 words of spoken English, and initiates the majority of
conversations with her human companions.

uh!

She typically constructs statements averaging three to six words. In
1998 Koko had a live chat with some 13,000 people online.

ah!
